How Can I learn About WordPress?

You don’t have to be much of a geek to run a WordPress site. On the other hand it is an extremely powerful platform and can be as sophisticated as almost anything on the Internet.

I believe that you can start with a simple WP site and then learn “as you go” to make it better and better.

How do you go about learning the nuances as you go along?

I think one terrific way is what I call a “bite at a time.” Syed Balkhi has a great business creating plug-ins (more about that later) for WP sites. He publishes a “how to” blog on WordPress and if you subscribe to it each day he will send you a short but complete instruction on how to do something on the platform. I read it every single day….even when it seems like it is about something I may not use. It probably takes me 5-10 minutes a day while I am drinking coffee and I consider it a base part of my continuing education.

Why do I think this is important? Every time I want to do something new on my websites I don’t want to be having to call (and pay) a developer, that’s why. I also don’t want to wait for he or she to get around to my little project. I want it now. If I don’t want to do it myself, I at least want to know how to manage it down the line and that means I need to have somewhat of a working knowledge of the platform.

I can hear you thinking “I don’t want to become a website developer for crying out loud.” I get that. Me either. I’ve paid people as much as $5000 to create a very professional WP based website. When they were done, though, I could go to the Admin page and tweak it, add content, make changes, etc. because WP is elegantly simple while at the same time complex and sophisticated.

Don’t panic. You don’t have to go spend $5000. You can get started for almost nothing and you can learn to manage it for nothing.

I’d suggest you go straight to wpbeginner.com and sign up for his daily subscription. Like right now.

TIP: I created a folder in my email Inbox for WordPress and each day after I read Syeds email I file it there. Anytime I have a question on something I go to my treasure trove and see if I have received anything from him on that subject. Try this and in no time at all you will have a free WP course sitting right there in your Inbox.
